 History of Wreaths

The history of wreaths originates in Europe. Creating and wearing wreaths started with Greek and Roman times with the aristocrats.  In ancient times a wreath was made of olive leaves and laurel. The wreath was called a diadem, the Greek word for "a thing bound around", and was accepted by the general population as a meaning of wealth and athletic abilities.  Recall pictures, movies or statues of the Roman aristocrats, as they are often seen wearing a wreath on their heads. They were made of leaves of oak and laurel. These royal diadems surrounding the head of royalty became known as crowns, the Latin word for corona, that means wreath.  These wreaths were worn only during certain ceremonies and when presentation was important. Over time the idea of wearing them changed to putting them on the entryway so the prestige of showing the wreaths might last longer than just wearing them. This quickly became the accepted practice of the royalty and upper-class.

Throughout the years the wreath held its popularity and spread throughout Europe and finally into America.  The decorations put on the wreaths became more and more detailed, and dependent upon the culture, held meaning as visitors entered the homes. To this day the wreath is as individual as each person, symbolizing different meanings to different people and cultures. The wreath is created and put at the entry of the home or within the home for its beauty and, to some people and cultures, individualized & cultural symbolism. Your choices of what type of wreath you want to display is left only to your imagination.
